木陰亭昔語り 第22回

～白山公園～

今回は、新潟市中央区にある白山公園のお話です。

ある年の元旦のこと。木陰亭さんの茶の間では、初詣に出かける支度の真っ最中でした。

― それでは、木陰亭さんに語ってもらいましょう ―

今年の正月は珍しく晴れたから、白山神社も賑わっておるじゃろう。坊の目当ての猿小屋も、混んでるかも知れんぞ。人波が引くまで、白山公園でも散歩するかの？ 街中にあって、さほど大きくもない公園じゃが、白山公園は、日本で最初に開設された公園のひとつなんじゃよ。そもそも江戸時代には、日本に公園というものは存在しなかった。すなわち、“公園”という言葉自体、明治になってから出来たものなんじゃ。明治6年のこと、当時の政府が、「古来から名所旧跡といわれるところは公園として申し出よ」という布告を出した。これに応じて、新潟県令（今の県知事）楠本正隆が、白山神社の周辺を申請させた。その年認可された公園は、日本中で25箇所じゃったそうじゃ。東京の上野公園、横浜の山手公園、水戸の偕楽園、錚々(そうそう)たる公園が名を連ねておった。白山公園も、そのひとつだったということじゃな。さて、そろそろ出かけようかの。
